In shortB&D MOVES is Barking and Dagenham's community-led movement to help people move more, more often, starting with those who find it hardest. Here's what that means and how to get involved.
Quick facts
- A partnership of the council, BDCVS, B&D Giving, London Sport, community groups, health services, schools and residents
- Focused on people doing less than 30 minutes of activity a week
- Three ways in: residents, local organisations, partners and networks
Too many people in Barking and Dagenham face barriers to moving: cost, time, confidence, caring responsibilities, not feeling safe or welcome, or simply not knowing what's on nearby. B&D MOVES exists to remove them, so that moving fits into everyday life. If you just want to know what's on offer, the answers to the most common questions are a good place to start.
Listen. Connect. Change.
The partnership works in three ways. It listens locally, starting with residents and the places and groups already in each community. It connects the system, bringing community groups, health, schools, housing and others together. And it changes the conditions, building local capacity, testing ideas and influencing decisions about places and resources.
Who it's for
Everyone in the borough, and especially the people who do the least activity today. If you already love being active, brilliant: bring someone with you.
How to get involved
- Residents: find something nearby on What's on, start small, and tell us what would make moving easier. One email a month keeps you posted: sign up for updates.
- Local organisations: list what you do, use the brand and connect with support and partners.
- Partners and networks: open doors, bring people in and help improve local services, spaces and decisions. Get in touch.
Questions people ask
Do I have to be sporty?
No. Walking, dancing, gardening and playing with the kids all count. B&D MOVES is for people who don't think of themselves as sporty most of all.
