About B&D MOVES

What is B&D MOVES?

B&D MOVES is Barking and Dagenham's community-led movement to help more people move more, more often. It brings local organisations, the council, community groups, health services, schools and residents together to make being active easier, starting with the people who find it hardest.

It is not a sports club or a single programme. It is about everyday movement (a walk with a neighbour, a dance class, a kickabout) and about changing the things that get in the way.

Who is behind B&D MOVES?

A partnership of local organisations, including the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD), Barking and Dagenham Council for Voluntary Service (BDCVS), B&D Giving and London Sport, alongside community and faith groups, health services, schools, sport and activity providers, housing providers and local volunteers. It is backed by Sport England through its Place Expansion programme.

Who is B&D MOVES for?

Everyone in Barking and Dagenham, but especially people who do little or no physical activity right now. If you already love being active, brilliant: bring someone with you.

What does "inactive" mean?

Doing less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week. That is the measure Sport England uses. Activity means anything that gets you moving: walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, playing with the kids. It does not have to be sport.

Why does Barking and Dagenham need this?

Too many people in the borough face barriers to being active: cost, time, confidence, caring responsibilities, feeling safe and welcome, or simply not knowing what is on nearby. Local people and organisations know where those barriers are, so B&D MOVES starts by listening to them and works on what they say needs to change.

Finding something to do

How do I find something near me?

Use What's on. Search by where you live and what you fancy, and every listing tells you when, where, who it is for and what it costs. The same listings appear on London Sport's London-wide activity finder, so you only need to look in one place.

Link to this answer
Is it free?

Lots of sessions are free or low cost. Every listing on What's on says what it costs before you go.

I'm not sporty and haven't done anything in years. Is this for me?

Yes. You are exactly who B&D MOVES is for. Start small: a walk, a gentle chair-based session, a games afternoon. Bring a mate if it helps, and go at your own pace. Nobody is judging.

I have a health condition or a disability. Can I join in?

Many sessions are gentle and set up for people living with long-term conditions or disabilities, and each listing says who it is for. If you are not sure, ask the organiser before you go. If you are unsure what is safe for you, check with your GP or health professional first.

Are there sessions just for women, young people or older people?

Yes, where local organisers run them. Each listing on What's on says who the session is for.

Can I bring my children?

It depends on the session. Family sessions say so on the listing, and some youth sessions are for set ages. If in doubt, ask the organiser.

Link to this answer
What do I need to bring?

Usually nothing special: comfortable clothes, shoes you can move in and a drink of water. If a session needs anything else, the listing says so.

Something on a listing is wrong. Who do I tell?

Email hello@banddmoves.co.uk with the session name and what is wrong, and we will get it fixed with the organiser.

For groups and organisations

How do I add my activity to What's on?

Follow Start here. It is free and takes about 15 minutes. Your listing then shows on B&D MOVES and on London Sport's London-wide finder. If you would rather we helped, email hello@banddmoves.co.uk.

Can my group use the B&D MOVES logo and brand?

Yes, free, for anyone working with B&D MOVES. The brand guide shows how, the logo files are on the homepage, and you can make your own poster in a few minutes.

How can my organisation get involved?

Tell us what you do on the Get involved page or book a 20-minute chat. The simplest ways to help: list your activity, share B&D MOVES with the people you work with, and tell us what gets in the way for them.

Link to this answer
What are the check-in posters?

A poster with a QR code for your door. People scan it and tap "I'm here": no app, no names, a few seconds. Over time it shows how many people come, how many are new and how many come back, which is evidence you can use for funding and reporting. If someone would rather not scan, a member of staff can count them in on one phone. Ask us for yours at hello@banddmoves.co.uk.

Is there funding for my group?

B&D MOVES is not a grants scheme, but some opportunities come through it, such as support for small local groups and roles to lead parts of the work. They are announced here and in the monthly email, so sign up to hear first.

How do I keep up to date?

Test & Learns

What is a Test & Learn?

A small, time-limited project run by a local organisation to try a new way of helping people move, and to learn what works before it is done on a bigger scale. What each one finds out is shared openly, so the whole borough learns from it.

Link to this answer
Which Test & Learns are running now?

This autumn they include gentle exercise for body and mind at Heath Park Community Centre with Independent Living Agency, Fuel, Move with Triangoals Youth FC at the Rivergate Centre, and Scroll Less, Move More for young people at Make It Barking, run by JDS. Sessions are on What's on and the stories go up in News.

Link to this answer
How do you know if a Test & Learn worked?

Three ways: anonymous check-ins (how many people came, how many were new, how many came back), a quick tap to say how a session went, and conversations with the people taking part. The results go into case studies on this site.

Can my organisation run a Test & Learn?

We would love to hear your idea. Email hello@banddmoves.co.uk, and future opportunities will be shared here and in the monthly email.

Funding and how it's run

Is B&D MOVES a grants programme?

No. Rather than funding one-off projects, partners work together over several years to change the things around people: services, spaces, information and how decisions are made, so the difference lasts beyond the funding.
